How to uninstall Box Sync on Mac

I installed it to try it out, now I want to uninstall it.  When I search help for uninstall I get nothing, when I google on "uninstall box sync on mac" I get nothing useful, but its obvious others have googled it before. When I examine contents of the Box Sync installer app and the preference pane, there is no uninstaller hidden inside the contents.  When I right mouse clicked on the preference icon in the System Preferences icon table, I did get a Remove Box Sync Preference Pane action, I clicked on that and the preference pane disappeared,  but the Box Sync icon is still on the top bar...  I'll try rebooting and see if it goes away.  How am I really supposed to uninstall it?  Thanks, Robert

I do not have a Box Sync Installer in my downloads folder.  Given this, how do I uninstall it?

Jim, you can download the Box Sync Installer from   www.box.com/settings/sync

Eric, you dont need to reinstall anything to uninstall Box Sync, what David meant is that you can reinstall Box Sync from this link if you change your mind and want to start using Box Sync again after you uninstalled it.

So, what if I no longer have the installer and I no longer have a Box Business account? Where can I find the installer to uninstall the product?

As Jim kindly pointed out, you can download the Box Sync Installer from:

www.box.com/settings/sync

Once you've re-downloaded the installer, here are the steps for uninstalling Box Sync for Mac:

  1. Look in your downloads folder for the "Box Sync Installer". Double-click to launch it.

  2. Click the "Uninstall" button

  3. Once the uninstall finishes, please reinstall from this link:  www.box.com/settings/sync

Since I do not have a box business account any longer the installer is not available from that link.

"Using Box Sync for Mac, you can easily sync desktop files with Box and collaborate on shared folders right from your desktop. Get notifications when a shared file you synced is uploaded.  Learn more about Sync.

To enable this you must  upgrade to Box Business."

David, that's the same link... see the attached screenshot. I may be missing something but I don't see a download link for the OS X installer there.

My sincere apologies for the oversight on my part.

I just enabled Box Sync for your account and you should be able to download the installer now.

Thanks for being so patient and understanding.

Hi David D. When trying to sync my Mac with Box 'they' have blocked my account. It says I need to contact support. Then I saw that there are some issues with Mac and Sync and thought I'd better uninstall. So I don't want to delete my account but just get it off my Mac... or do you have another solution for this. Btw it works on my phone just great! Thx

2) Click the "Uninstall" button

Thanks. This should be more apparent to the user. I kept getting a permissions box each time I opened my computer and I could not get it to go away. No help for this on the Box FAQS etc.

Hi, I've tried to do the same and it stays there. Can i simply move it to trash? Will my files stay in my online box? I need to clear my computer and i need to make sure that my files are safe.

Sorry, but Dropbox is better. I used to be a good user of Box. But Box did a bad job of the folder management. It's very clear, if you don't understand, just try "dropbox for mac" and you'll see.

Box sync is suck, keep freezing my system, keep asking to change filenames, keep saying web is blocked. What the... I have to switch to dropbox now. Such an annoying product. So disappointed

Wow, thank goodness I found this thread. I don't think I've ever commented on something like this publicly before, but my experience with Box compels me to on this occasion. Box is one of the trashiest, most poorly developed systems I've run across in a long time. The Box Sync "application" constantly punished my Mac to the tune of 98-99% of my CPU resources whenever it was syncing, and it ate RAM for breakfast. I finally uninstalled it, and I have no intention of going back. I have a fair bit of data scattered across Dropbox, Google Drive, SugarSync, and up until now, Box. Everyone else is doing it better and faster than Box. *Everyone* else.

One of the most arrogant product ...big bully when it comes to uninstalling this box from Mac. However, I could find this useful, after several attempts to uninstall BOX

Uninstalling Box Sync on a PC:

  1. In Windows, open "Control Panel"
  2. Select "Programs" > "Uninstall a program"
  3. Scroll down the list and select "Box Sync"
  4. Click Uninstall

Uninstalling Box Sync on a Mac:

  1. Open the application "Activity Monitor" on your Mac and search for Box Sync. Select "Quit Process" then choose "Force Quit."
  2. Open "System Preferences," then right-click on the Box Sync icon and choose "Remove Box Sync Preference Pane"
  3. Open "Finder" on your Mac, navigate to "~/Library/Application Support" and delete the "Box" folder by moving it to the trash
  4. Restart your computer

After following Box's first response in this thread, I had absolutely no difficulties uninstalling box sync from my computer. Even the menubar icon promptly disappeared. While it was installed on my computer, I had no issues with it crashing my computer either.

However, I'm surprised at the difficulty I had in figuring out how to uninstall. Box's FAQ doesn't mention it and even the site's own search bar couldn't locate "uninstall". I had to google it to find this page. It would be nice if uninstalling options were more apparent and/or more readily available. Just a suggestion.

NOT A GOOD EXPERIENCE WITH THIS APP. DON'T INSTALL IT WITHOUT READING THIS.....

Box authors assume we WANT 24-7 box access and constant resource hogging of the finder.  I do not want that, and did not think I was getting that when I hit install. Box should come clean BEFORE install and describe what will happen. It was too late when I say that Box Sync forces a restart of the finder and becomes an extension to the finder.  Would prefer to have the program load the normal way, by letting user add it to user's startup items at login.  Which allows us to delete it after.

Also.. since I'm typing away waiting for a download, general comment about box as a service... way, way too much detail and overhead and attention for an simple FTP replacement. We designer and printer types must use every flavor of the month large file transfer program out there. Box is possibly the most cumbersome bloated version of these utilities I have run across.  I wish you had a quick mode or advanced user (cut the crap mode).

On the positive side, your transfer speeds are fast. That partly makes up for the layers of screen changes and use of cough flash (ugh).

I have the box sync app on my mac, but when I click it nothing happens. Plus, there is only a choice for Install, no uninstall...but I clearly have it installed.

I use a MAC running OSX 10.8

"I have the box sync app on my mac, but when I click it nothing happens. Plus, there is only a choice for Install, no uninstall...but I clearly have it installed."

I have the same problem as this user. No Uninstal option .... no folder in my finder .... and no easy to find solution!!

A bit of a nightmare really!

Any help/suggestions to getting this resolved (box removed or box sync working properly - I'm not fussed which) would be much appreciated.

I'm running Box Sync 3.4.25 on OSX 10.6.8. I need to uninstall Box, but the installer from your download link won't run on my OS. Where can I find an older version of the installer that will allow me to uninstall?
