Jim,

The way to avoid things being placed in the default sync folder is to make sure you are designating some other specific folders for sync. Then when you're working from the desktop, you can drop / save the files you're working on to their respective folders. That way they won't all end up in the default sync folder.

Hope that will work for you but please let me know if I missed the mark or if there is anything else I can do to help.

I like to keep things in a root folder its kinda my working area only when i am done do I file things to folders. Anything that automatically moves anything is not appropriate. This is a huge show stopper for me.

Jim,

Please forgive me if I am missing your point but only root folders are eligible to by synced. So the "default sync folder" is a root folder.

If you could elaborate on how you would like to see this work I will of course be happy to pass your suggestion along to our product managers.

Thank you!

Oh so your not allowing files in the my box folder to be synced? Thats why you move them? To me the My box folder is the root.

Sorry for the confusion.

You cannot mark individual files to be synced.

Only root level folders (as viewed from the web app) are eligible to be synced to the "My Box Files" folder on the desktop.

If you drop individual files into the "My Box Files" sync folder on the desktop, they are by default placed in the "default sync folder" within the web app (which is a root level folder).

Hope that helps!

Thanks for hanging in there for me.

I find that a bit counter intuitive but if that is the way it works. I guess I could live with it.

This option is so annoying!!! I´m so hating this right now... for me, it's more like a deal breaker...

I agree with Rene. Just let me keep my files in the My Box Files. The "default sync folder" is pointless and annoying to me.

I think what the others above are saying is that it would be nice to be able to drop a file into the "Box Documents" folder and that it stay at that top level and still be synced. Let us suppose I am moving a file to another computer quickly--I don't want to have to go to the trouble of navigating to/from a specific folder for something ephemeral--I just want to drop the file there on one computer and pick it up on the other. Dropbox does this--so surely you can too?? Having files moved without the users say-so is perhaps not a good idea.

I agree with the comments above. To make matters worse, not all files seem to be automatically moved. The example I have is a Mathematica file (.nb) saved from within Mathematica (which means Mathematica probably locked it from being moved). The result of the "automatic" moving not working is that it was not synced (which caused me much problems...). Placing it by hand in the "Default Sync Folder" folder made it sync. Not really smooth...

I agree with the comments. It is far more intuitive to sync individual files placed in the Box Documents -- virtually all competing products do this: Dropbox, SkyDrive, Google Drive, SugarSync... It's extremely annoying having everything moved to the Default Sync Folder.

I will just agree with all the comments above. I don't understand the point of the Default Sync Folder. Just sync the file the way I add them to Box Documents.

I agree with all the comments above. I'm sure you can modify this option, like Dropbox does right now. Please do it.

Same. It's not as intuitive as Dropbox. And I found I couldn't simply drag one folder into another. I had to disable sync to do that. That's even more counter-intuitive.

I agree with them, it is boring. When I upload a file from Camscanner or another app (android or ios), it is uploaded to root folder and not to "default sync folder", so it isn't available on my PC. I need to open BOX app and manually move de file to "Default Sync Folder". It is really annoying.

I dont want a folder named default synch folder.  Why do I have to use it?  A folder names my box files works just fine.  Stop this!!!  It is very annoying.  Other cloud services dont make you do this.

Agree with all the comments, by default Box should sync all files and folders i have uploaded.  I should be able to disable sync for folders i don't want synced.  That would be less of a hassle than the way it is right now.  I hate moving files around on my android phone to make sure they get synced to my computer and playbook.

Just adding my support for what's been said above. I find it incredibly irritating that I cannot keep files in the regular "My Box Files" folder, and that they automatically get moved to the "Default Sync Folder" -- which I don't even want. There is a single file in "My Box Files" folder -- the Box Sync ReadMe PDF, which must mean it is possible to keep files there. Yet we cannot.

In general, I want my UX to be as few clicks as possible. This is why I'm in support of few folder structures. I prefer to use nomenclature and metadata to sort and find my files (see: folksonomy). Thus, I would like to place MOST files in the "My Box Files" folder, but named appropriately for me to find them. The "Default Sync Folder" means I  have yet another click to access files, and it is super annoying.

PLEASE change this, or at the very least give users the option to turn it on / off.

Adrienne,

Very much appreciate your thoughtful feedback and suggestions.

I meet with our product team on a weekly basis as well as log all feature requests via a tracking system so that they can be prioritized and added to our product roadmap.

The functionality you're asking for is actually already in the works and will be a part of the new version of Box Sync which is slated for release later this year.

While I don't have a hard ETA to share just yet, I promise I will remind our product team know just how important this is.

Please let us know if there are any other features / enhancements you'd like to see or if there is anything else that I can do to be of assistance.

Thank you again for your time and consideration and thanks for using Box!

I am new to Box Sync.  I currently do not have any folders set up for sync.  I would like to select several folders that already exist on my computer and sync them to Box.  How do I do that?

I would like to define the folder in which My  Box Sync on my PC will be in! I don't want it to be in my documents folder. How can I define, where the My box sync folder should be (as I could do in dropbox)?

How annoying is this 'feature'. I run a backup job weekly into my box root folder and then this stupid feature moves the files around every week.

Its just daft.

Please, please, please just remove this feature, I agree with every single one of the comments listed, this feature is a deal breaker, help us to keep using your product. Waiting until later this year might push some people to switch to dropbox, skydrive, google drive or cubby, I am actually thinking about it myself, please don't take too long....

To make it even more ridiculous, the Android app does only upload to the root folder, so these files never get in sync with the desktop, unless I move them manually. Excellent concept, guys!

I just wanted to throw my towel into the bucket that I do not like the idea of a "Default Sync Folder".  if I want files to be placed into the root sync, or what I think is the root sync folder (i.e., "My Box Files") then this behavior should be changed.  To compound this, if I specify the location of the Box sync folder as "\My Files\Box" it wants to make a folder of "My Box Files".  Now, with a "default" sync folder I have a path of "\My Files\Box\My Box Files\Default Sync Folder".  Oh, I don't like the application forcing me to the organization methodology that the architectures/developers feel that I must follow.  I was going to consolidate all my Google Drive/DropBox files into Box, but with this discovery, I have moved everything back.  Until Box allows me to organize my folder structure to suit me needs (i.e., not Box's needs) I will stick with the other tools out there.

@Petra Schuster, this may be accomplished by going to the Box Sync settings, select "Change 'My Box Files' location".  The application does not ask, or at least I did not see the option, where the user would like to house the Box folder.  This is another item that needs to be addressed in the next release of Box.

When I want to upload a file to box (with my box app in german), I klick on the file, choose share and klick on box. than I am ask for box password. Next I can choose the folder in which to upload the file (with klick on "Alle Dateien" means "all files" or so). So what was the problem here?
