The 'Search' feature is a quick and convenient way of locating what you need without having to browse through all your folders. To search for a file or folder, locate the search bar shown in the center of the header. As you begin typing your search query in the search bar at the center of the menu, suggested results will appear in a dropdown window under the search bar.

If one of the suggested results is the item you need, simply click on it in the window to be taken to it directly. If you would like to see all the results for your search query, press Enter/Return on your keyboard after you’ve typed the full query or click on the Search all results entry at the bottom of the list of suggested results.

Full-text search has a maximum limit of 10,000 characters within a document. Depending on the type and format of text indexed, this limit may be reduced.

Enter all or part of the word you are searching for and the search will return any files and folders in your account containing the entered text. The tool will search the title, description, comments, and the user name of the creator and uploader to return your result.  If you have a Business or Enterprise account the search results will provide a list of files and folders containing the entered text in their name, content or description. We currently offer limited full-text search functions for the following filetypes:  'doc', 'webdoc', 'xls', 'pdf', 'html', 'ppt', 'docx', 'xlsx', 'pptx', 'txt', 'csv', 'xml', 'php', 'css', 'sql', 'odt', 'odp', 'ods', 'rtf', 'gdoc', 'gsheet'

Search Filtering
If you would like to limit search results to content in a particular folder or of a particular file type, use the Filter feature on the right-hand side.

You can filter by:

  • Folder
  • Owner
  • Type
  • Date Modified
  • Size
  • Search Within

Advanced Search:

Box Search supports the following Boolean operators and characters: "AND", "OR", "NOT". Please note that we support lower case instances of "and" "or" and "not" but not mixed case. (ie "And", "Or", "Not" will not work)

Phrase Search
Box also allows you to search for exact phrases within the content of a document. Any search term that you include within quotations is treated as a query for a specific phrase. Box will return only the documents that contain that exact phrase. An example of a such a search is "The Blue Pill" - which will match documents that contain that specific phrase only.
