FTP is available to Business and Enterprise accounts for bulk migration of data. This tool is designed to be used for initial bulk uploading and occasional bulk downloading of files from your account -- we do not recommend using FTP as your primary access method.
To connect to Box's FTP server you will need an FTP client of your choosing (Filezilla, Cyberduck, SmartFTP, etc.). Please read this article to Preserve Original Created/Modified Times.
To access Box's FTP server, please use the following:
- Server: ftp.box.com
- Username: Your Box account email address
- Password: Your Box account password
- Port: 21 for standard FTP connection, 990 for implicit encrypted connection (FTPS), 21 for FTPES explicit encrypted connection. Transfers may be slower when using encryption due to additional processing.
- Please note that we support Passive FTP, but not Active.
See example image below for connecting with Filezilla. Leave 'Port' field blank and Filezilla automatically knows the correct port to use.
Notes and Troubleshooting:
- To access Box's FTP server, it is required to have Box FTP Server set to available in your Admin Console > Business/Enterprise Settings > Apps tab. This option should be set to available by default. If Box FTP Server is disabled, you will receive an Authentication Failed message when you attempt to log in from the FTP client.
- FTP as a transfer protocol does not support Single Sign-On. If SSO is enabled for your account, you will need to create a Box-specific password to supplement your SSO login. You can do so by logging in to your Box account from a browser and going to your Account Settings. On the Account tab you will find the section Create External Password.
- Box supports FTP (port 21), FTPS implicit (port 990), and FTPES explicit (port 21), over passive FTP. Box does not support active FTP or SFTP.
- Resuming an upload/download: The commands, REST (restart) and APPE (append) are not supported. This means that we do not support resumable uploads/downloads of partial files on Box for FTP. Any failed upload or download needs to be retried from the beginning of the file.
- 530 Box: CAPTCHA is required. If you see this error, you have triggered Captcha on your account. To clear the Captcha, login with your web browser and Box credentials to https://app.box.com/
- If you are a Box Enterprise administrator and would like to limit your managed users to only using FTPS - rather than FTP - please contact your Customer Success Manager.
