November 2014 - February 2015 End of Life (EOL) Notice

·

Get Training
We're working constantly to improve the user experience on Box, and sometimes that means removing complex or rarely used functionality to make room for an even better product. Full details on two such features that will be removed from the Box product throughout this quarter are available below

Wordpress

  • As of December 1, 2014, we will end support for the creation of new Wordpress widgets. At this time, the Wordpress widget EOL will only stop the creation of new Wordpress widgets and not affect existing widget functionality.

  • As of January 5, 2015, we will officially end all support for the Wordpress widget, including the ability to upload. You will need to fully transition to Box Embed for the same functionality.

  • We encourage you to use Box Embed to embed files and folders from your account page onto any website, blog, or social networking service that supports HTML iframe embed code. To learn more, see our Box Embed article.

Box for Office 2007
  • On January 31, 2015, we will no longer support the Box for Office integration on Office 2007 or any previous Box for Office / Box for Outlook integrations
  • Before that time, all users, including those using Office 2010 or 2013, must upgrade to the newest version of the Box for Office integration, as the old version will no longer be supported
  • Moving forward, users should leverage the all-new Box for Office integration that supports Office 2010 and Office 365 desktop applications, which includes the Office 2013 suite.
  • Admins can follow these steps to install the MSI:
    1. Ensure that prerequisites are installed separately prior to running the MSI:
    1. If all these requirements have been met, download the Box for Office MSI and deploy it in your environment

Box for Office Uninstallation Scripts (System Administrator Focus)
  • Box provides two different scripts for system administrators to remove Box for Office installations. One script removes the old Box for Office as well as the new Box for Office (https://app.box.com/s/9053q4mml05f43y7dwmd). The other script removes the old Box for Office but leaves the new Box for Office installed (https://app.box.com/s/4nxq3b94rd6beaag769p). The following procedure can be used to uninstall Box for Office installations:
  1. Open the Group Policy Management Console.
  2. Expand Forest, Domains, and the domain. Right-click Group Policy Objects, and then click New.
  3. In the New GPO dialog, in the Script Name field, type Box for Office Uninstallation. Click OK.
  4. Right-click Box for Office Uninstallation under Group Policy Objects, and then click Edit.
  5. In the Group Policy Management Editor window, expand Computer Configuration > Policies > Windows Settings, and click Scripts (Startup/Shutdown).
  6. In the right pane, right-click Startup, and then click Properties.
  7. In the Startup Properties window, click Show Files...
  8. Download the uninstallation script, and save it to the folder that Show Files... opened. The script requires administrator privileges. To remove both new and old versions of Box for Office: https://app.box.com/s/9053q4mml05f43y7dwmd. To remove only old versions of Box for Office: https://app.box.com/s/4nxq3b94rd6beaag769p.
  9. Close Windows Explorer, and return to the Startup Properties window. Click Add...
  10. In the Add a Script dialog, in Script Name, click Browse..., and select the script you saved in the previous step. Click OK.
  11. In the Startup Properties window, click Apply, and then OK. Close the Group Policy Management Editor window.
  12. In the Group Policy Management Console, link the GPO to the domain or any organizational unit.

If you do not upgrade to the newest version of the Box for Office integration before February 1, 2015, users will see the following error messages when attempting to perform the following actions:

  • Logging in: Box for Office is not available to your account...

  • Logging in: An unexpected error has occurred...
  • Opening a file: You don't have permission to download this file...

  • Sharing a file: You do not have permission to share this file...

  • Saving attachments, Sharing from Box, or Upload and Share: An error occurred...
  • Saving a file
In this case, you may not see an error message, but you will not be able to save the file.
