When trying to click the pencil icon to edit a file in your Internet Explorer (IE) browser you may see one of the following messages:

  1. Your current browser mode does not support Box Edit
  2. Install Box Edit (even though it's already installed)

These may be caused by IE security settings. Please review problems and solutions below:

ActiveX Filtering:

  1. Symptom: Your current browser mode does not support Box Edit
  2. In Internet Explorer (IE), check if ActiveX Filtering is enabled in IE > Safety > ActiveX Filtering
  3. Disable it and refresh the page.

ActiveX Plugins:

  1. Symptom: Your current browser mode does not support Box Edit
  2. IE > Internet Options > Security > Custom level > Scroll down to the section: ActiveX controls and plug-ins > Run ActiveX controls and plug-ins > Enable

Enhanced Protected Mode in IE:

If Enhanced Protected Mode is enabled in IE you may see "Install Box Edit" even though you already have installed it. Internet Explorer may popup a small ribbon showing:
This webpage wants to run 'Box Edit' which isn't compatible with Internet Explorer's enhanced security features. If you trust this site, you can disable Enhanced Protected Mode for this site and allow the control to run.

In the popup above, click Run Control to allow Box Edit to edit the page and add it to the preapproved ActiveX controls list and then click the Edit (pencil) icon again. If you accidentally selected "Don't Run" then you may still see the message to Install Box Edit. Clear your browser cache and cookies and history to reset this dialog so it shows again.

Another option is to add Box.com to the Trusted sites zone in Internet Explorer.
To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Login to Box.com in IE
  2. On the browser File menu, click Add this site to, and then click Trusted Sites Zone.
  3. In the Trusted sites dialog box, click Add to move Box to the list, and then click Close.
  4. Refresh the page to view the site from its new zone and confirm that Box Edit launches.

If you still see "Install Box Edit" please try disabling Enhanced Protected Mode in IE:

  1. On IE's menu, click Internet Options > Advanced tab
  2. Scroll down to Enable Enhanced Protected Mode and deselect the checkbox.
  3. Restart your IE browser for the changes to take effect.
  4. Confirm that Box Edit launches

Toolbars and Extensions:

  • Symptom: Install Box Edit appears even though it's installed
  • In IE, check if the Box Edit add-on is enabled. Note: You need to have your file/item in preview mode to see if the Box Edit add-on is enabled: IE > Manage Add-ons > Box Edit > Enabled
  • If you can't change your IE setting to Enabled, contact your IT department or Helpdesk and ask if they have a policy that is keeping it disabled.

App.box.com is blocked by a firewall:
