Official commentWe are excited to announce that we have released a Public Beta of Box Drive that is compatible with new Apple devices with M1 chips today. Any Box user can access this without signing the Master Beta Agreement. To find out more information, including the installation and download instructions, please visit our community page.We know that it's been extremely challenging and frustrating for many of you that we didn't have a compatible version of Box Drive on M1 devices previously. We are truly sorry for all the inconvenience this has caused and we sincerely appreciate your patience as we've worked hard to get this general access for users. Please note that this Public Beta is based on Box Drive's existing architecture, which uses kernel extensions. As such, it requires users to enable 'reduced security mode' and requires additional installation steps in order to run Box Drive on M1 devices. Organizations that have MDM configured on their devices can follow these configuration steps to the ease installation steps for their users. Later this year, we are planning to add support for a new version of Box Drive that will be built using Apple's File Provider Extension (FPE) APIs. This new architecture provides a modern implementation that exists in user space with no kernel extensions, so users will not have to enable 'reduced security mode'. It will also significantly streamline the install experience for Box Drive on M1 devices.Thank you again for all your patience. We truly appreciate it.Best,RenaComment actions

I'd like to add my name to the list of frustrated and baffled Box subscribers that use this service for their businesses. The continued lack of support for Box drive on Apple M1 Silicon is really hard to rationalize, given both the significant market presence of Apple as well as the advance developer access that was available well ahead of the M1 chipset launch. The online Box portal is no replacement for Drive, and the lack of support for this tool has significantly impacted our workflow. Can we at the very least get a firm date for the deployment of this tool so that we can properly plan? I concur with an earlier poster that, absent some form of update or firm release target, I will be forced to move my company off of Box in favor of options that are able to keep abreast of changes in the technology marketplace.

Add my name to this list as well.
I emailed Box yesterday and they could not give me a response regarding when this issue would be fixed. They say hopefully Q1, but could not even confirm if it would be by March.
They also emailed me saying that they would not offer a discount for my inconvenience during this time.
I paid for a third party app called CloudMounter that is working better than the Box web platform, but still has too many issues to call it a fix. It doesn't let me delete files 90% of the time, and if I edit any files I need to save them to my computer before I can drag them back into Box. It is not a free program either, I think I am paying $10 for the first three months.
Last night I spent 4 hours looking for a different storage service for my business but NONE of them are supporting the M1 chip right now. I'm not sure what other businesses are doing. Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive, ShareFile and Egnyte are all having the same issues. (Those are the ones that I found that will integrate into finder without a 3rd party app).

Hey Guys. Make sure firstly you contact your Box account manager and enquire about the Box M1 Beta program. This will make sure you are ready for when that becomes available (like us). Secondly, download the old Box Sync. It works perfectly on M1 devices (although its a bit slow). Just start by syncing the smaller folders and work your way up to your bigger ones or just select them all and leave overnight. We actually found that once we got Sync up and running that employees liked that better than Drive (because it supports quick look and search).
I hope Box release a fix soon though as its a bit embarrassing because they are Apples number one preferred cloud partner and they speak quite often at WWDC about being the best enterprise solution.
Hopefully, that helps!
Also, we firstly used CloudMounter and didn't have to pay for it, but recently moved over to Sync.

I'm also seeing the updated article on Box Tools (no version number given, but dated with an update on Jan 20, 201) is "now supported". However attempting to install it does prompt to install Rosetta.
Hoping for more open development. Apple announced and made transition kits available last summer...

Hi Everyone,
We appreciate you following up on this issue.
As mentioned by our members here, our product team has made an announcement on Box Tools that is now supported on Apple devices running M1 Processor. You can find the announcement here: https://support.box.com/hc/en-us/articles/1500000564381-M1-support-for-Box-Tools
For Box Drive, we are targeting beta testing our support for Apple Silicon devices soon so rest assured that our team is working diligently for a fix in a future release so please look forward to it. For members that are interested in participating in this program, you will need to coordinate with your internal Box Admin Team and Box Account Team.
In the meantime, you can access your Box content on Apple Silicon devices via the Box web application by logging into app.box.com/login.
Thanks for your continued patience and participation in the community!

I've been discussing that article -- https://support.box.com/hc/en-us/articles/1500000564381-M1-support-for-Box-Tools -- with support today.
Box seems to be defining "support" as "can run with Rosetta". That is not native support. That is not arm64 support.
The community seems to expect (rightfully so) that when a software provider says "supported on this processor" that means native code execution. The currently available install package requires Rosetta to install. That means at step 1 you've already broken down and are not supported.
The software needs to be update, and that article should have a footnote to clearly identify the requirement that Rosetta must be installed as it is essential for functionality - ergo we don't actually support that processor architecture (arm64).

Hi Rena, I couldn't take any screenshots, but I was following the instructions you provided exactly. It sounds like the ' no admin found' error happens sometimes when someone migrates from another Mac without setting up an admin account, but in this case that doesn't seem to apply.

Hello all, we are excited to announce the next release of Box Drive (v2.23) will provide public beta access to our newest version of Box Drive on Mac, which has been completely updated with a new kext-free architecture which will provide seamless support for M1 and Intel-based Mac devices as well as provide support for macOS 12. This new version of Box Drive is built using Apple's File Provider APIs and no longer requires the use of kernel extensions (or reduced security mode) to run the application. You can learn more and access the public beta on our from our community page. Thanks all for your patience as we've worked to get to this solution!
