Overview
Box now supports customer access via Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) addresses. This benefits customers that have upgraded to IPv6 for security, as well as US government customers who are required to transition to IPv6 in accordance with the federal mandate. Box also supports dual stack operations (i.e., access via IPv4 and IPv6 in parallel). Note that some of your devices (e.g., most of modern smartphones) could have IPv6 enabled by default, and it will be preferred over IPv4 when connecting to Box.
Why are we doing this?
IPv6 has seen large adoption in the last five years.
Address abundance: IPv4 provides a limited number of unique addresses for global device use, while IPv6, with its 128-bit structure, offers 340 undecillion IP addresses. This ensures an ample address space.
End-to-end transparency: IPv6 removes the need for conservation measures like multiple levels of NATs (network address translators), promoting transparent connectivity, streamlined troubleshooting, and easier tracking of illicit activities.
Ease of management: The management of IPv6 networks is simplified with flatter architectures, fostering scalability, flexibility, and overall efficiency.
Do I need to do anything?
Box supports both IPv4 and IPv6 versions of the protocol going forward. Some devices (e.g., smartphones) have IPv6 enabled by default, and that means that it will be preferred over IPv4 when connecting to Box. If a device only supports IPv4, then IPv4 will be used to connect to Box. Also, if you are using the Box IP Allowlist, please contact Box Support to make sure it is set up correctly.
How to connect to Box using IPv6?
If you wish to connect to Box using IPv6, you need to make sure it is appropriately configured in your environment. There are multiple areas to consider, including your ISP support for IPv6, VPN configuration, firewall configuration, and even the configuration of your computer. You can use our test websites box-test.com and ipv6.box-test.com to test your IPv6 connectivity.

Cyber attacks on state and local governments have been an unfortunate reality for some time, and this has only increased with the past couple years, with the global pandemic changing how businesses are run and creating new vulnerabilities for attack. This increased vulnerability has highlighted the need for solutions like Box, that are built with frictionless security integrated into the platform, and that was what led to the creation of StateRAMP.
StateRAMP is a coalition of service providers, government officials, and third party assessors who have joined together to create a set of cybersecurity standards for solutions being utilized by state and local government. This “verify once, serve many” approach creates an authorized solution marketplace of vendors deemed sufficiently secure to serve state and local government organizations, and we are happy to announce that Box has joined that exclusive list.
The Box web application and many of our add ons are now StateRAMP Authorized and are available for state and local government organizations on the StateRAMP Authorized Vendor List. Through achieving StateRAMP Authorized status, Box is showing it’s commitment to offering a secure product that meets and exceeds the security requirements of our state & local customers.

The hybrid workforce, geopolitical environment, and global regulatory landscape have reshaped the way organizations approach compliance. According to Gartner, more than 60 jurisdictions around the world have enacted or proposed postmodern privacy and data protection laws making the regulatory landscape very complicated. At Box, securing our customers’ content is our top priority. We are excited to announce that we expanded Box Zones by adding an additional Zone location in France.
Box Zones can help support your organization’s data residency needs by allowing you to store your content in the geographic region of your choice. Now French Zones customers can store content in-country with storage locations in Paris and Marseille while customer file upload, download, and encryption actions remain within the European Union. Box is focused on expanding to more regions across the world to help our customers accelerate digital transformation while raising the bar for privacy, trust, and control in the Content Cloud.
Today, we have Zones in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, US, and the UK with secondary storage location options in Singapore and Ireland. For more information on Box Zones visit our website.

Box is committed to continually improving our level of accessibility and inclusive design. Currently, we offer accessibility support via a separate site: a.box.com, which we recognize is not an equivalent experience. To ensure a great experience for all users, Box is working to meet WCAG 2.0 Level AA compliance on core web app in Fall 2021, which will address issues outlined below. We are partnering with customers and industry experts to ensure high standards and testing. Note that Box partners with WebAIM for accessibility consultation. WebAIM has helpful resources on accessibility found here.
Accessibility & usability barriers
The following information is provided to help users looking to use Box with accessibility features know what potential barriers may exist within the Box web application. While Box does not have a dedicated support service specifically as it relates to accessibility or individuals with disabilities, Box provides support services for customers, which includes product issues and accessibility questions.
Some keyboard navigation barriers may be difficult for people with vision or motor disabilities
Keyboard navigation for certain functions on pages may not meet the visible keyboard focus indicator requirements. Menu buttons may not move correctly with keyboard focus. Focus order may not yet always match visual presentation and logic. One example of this issue is that there is no focus indicator outline when using a keyboard to navigate on the search dropdown.
Color contrast barriers may be difficult for people with color blindness
Some font colors and page elements may have insufficient/low color contrast with the background and may be difficult for some users to navigate and read if they have low vision or color blindness. Some focus indicators may also have low color contrast. One example of this issue is that the focus indicator for icons on the top right of the web application for the user such as tasks and notifications have low contrast barriers.
Magnified view of pages may be difficult for people with vision disabilities
When a page is magnified to enlarge text, there are some areas on a page where there is not proper reflow of the page. The search and navigation bar have fixed positions on the top of the page.
