Remove collaborator

I am trying to remove a collaborator from a file or subfolder, but receive a message saying if I continue that collaborator will be removed from the parent folder.  I don't want to remove from the parent folder, just the subfolder or file.  How do I do that?

  I am having the same issue.  If anyone could help us with an answer to how we can accomplish this, I would greatly appreciate it. I don't want to remove from the parent folder, just the subfolder or file.
