Accessing collaborated enterprise metadata templates

I have an app that has files shared with it from another enterprise, and I can successfully see those files and each one's metadata. However, when I try to search using the metadata, I get a 404 saying template with instance and scope not found. Is there any special action that needs to be taken to find an external metadata template like this?
