Accueil Bas-Chateau, I reinstalled the Box Tools software and that fixed my problem.

3. Box Edit: can't open file message when trying to edit in Word or Excel

So I reinstalled box tools for Mac and now I can open files.  Not sure what happened that it had stopped working after working fine forever.
