Box makes it easy to get started when you are looking to develop an application, by allowing you to create a developer enterprise through a self-service portal. This enterprise will provide you with a sandbox where you can develop and test your application without touching any live data or exposing your application to Box customers before you are ready for the go-live.
Once you create the account, you will be provided with a Developer Enterprise that is very similar to what you would see in our live customer environments. The enterprise will give you access to the admin-facing tools, allow you to create new users for testing purposes, as well as create and upload content in the enterprise that you might need for testing. As a Developer Enterprise, there is no associated cost to the API calls or the number of users that you may need to add during your development process.
Signing Up
The fastest way to sign up for a developer enterprise is by visiting our Developer Portal. This is also the hub where you will find most of our technical documentation, quick start guides, as well as full API reference documentation.
Once you are there, you will see a large "Sign Up" button in the upper header. If you do not see it, make sure that you are not currently already logged into an existing Box account, or visit the Developer Sign Up Page directly.
As a best practice, use an email address that is associated with your company and is not currently tied to an existing Box account. While this may not always be possible, it provides better ownership and tracking for the applications that you will be developing, as well as restoring access to applications if something were to come up.
You will receive an email to the address that you used during sign up to confirm and set your password. Once that's done, you are all set to log in and start developing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are there limitations to this account?
The provided developer account has a hard limit of 10 GB of total storage and a max upload size of 250MB. It also provides you with 10 seats for adding additional users, but will allow you to add more test users as needed. Note that the developer account is a base-level enterprise, so it will not include add-on products from Box such as Box Shield or Governance. If those are required, please reach out to your contact on the Box Partners team.
Is this different from a free personal account?
A free personal account is for an individual and lacks access to some features that would be required during the development process, such as the Admin section of an enterprise. If you've signed up for a free personal account and would like to utilize that for development purposes with your team, please reach out to your contact on the Box Partners team.
I did not receive a confirmation email.
Please make sure that the email address you used during sign up is a valid one and is able to receive emails from outside sources. You can try resending the confirmation email yourself, but if that does not work, please reach out to your Box Partner contact for further assistance.
What if I need any additional features for the enterprise?
Please reach out to your Box Partner contact with what you are looking for and we can review and make the appropriate changes to your developer account if needed.
