With the Box AI features in Slack we announced in July 2024, we help users bring their content and conversations together in a productive, secure and seamless way. Coming soon, it will be even easier for Box admins to empower their users with Box AI capabilities in Slack. The Box AI settings page of the Admin Console will expose the Enable Box AI for Slack toggle for your convenience. With this addition, the detailed setup of the integration will still be available within Admin Console > Integrations > Box Integrations & Clients > Individual Integration Controls > Box for Slack.

We are thrilled to announce that Box AI for Slack will soon be available in Slack's new AI App assistant view mode. This exciting feature will allow you to open a separate chat window with Box AI, where you can receive valuable insights generated by our AI technology. These insights will be based on the content shared within your channel or conversation in Box. This approach ensures a more private and seamless experience when interacting with Box AI, enabling you to have ongoing conversations and make the most out of its capabilities. We would also like to inform you that Slack will slightly change the way the AI App assistant view compatible apps display their Messages conversation with users. This change will affect Box for Slack. The AI App assistant view mode will be available to all Box customers who use the Box for Slack integration and enabled its Box AI capabilities. The AI App assistant features can be controlled in the Slack administration panel.

When working with documents stored in Box, you can ask Box AI to summarize document content, search key points, and write outline drafts which can save you time in analyzing your meeting notes, reports, and marketing assets, while giving you better insights on any content stored in Box. We’re now excited to bring this Box AI feature to Slack. Box and Slack joint customers can use Box for Slack to bring their content and conversations together in a secure and seamless way. We’re continuing to build on this popular app by introducing Box AI for Slack. When released, customers will be able query Box AI on either individual files or multiple files bookmarked in a Slack Channel by: Clicking the Ask Box AI button that shows up under a Box file linked in Slack Posting a message starting from “@Box…” to summon the Box AI bot Using the Ask Box AI shortcut on an existing Slack message with linked Box files Users can then choose to refine their query further before choosing whether or not to share the results with the channel or thread. Unlimited queries using Box AI for Slack are included in Enterprise Plus plans today. Eligible customers can turn on Box AI for their organization by accessing their Box Admin Console and can enable or disable Box AI for Slack via the Admin Console. Box for Slack must be enabled to use this feature.

Joint Box and Slack customers using Box for Slack get the ease of sharing and communication provided by Slack, with the content management and security features of Box. We’re dedicated to continuously working to provide a more seamless experience when working with Box content in Slack, that’s why we’re happy to be bringing Admin Delegated Authorization feature to Admins deploying Box for Slack at their enterprise. Previously, Box for Slack users had to authorize the app to access their Box account every time they logged in. With this new release, admins can navigate to the Admin Console and authorize all, or select, Slack Workspaces / Organizations - making deployment of the integration faster and easier. With the feature enabled, users will still need to authorize the Box app in Slack to access their Slack account, but the Box account access authorization will not be required. Look for more information in the article Deploying the Slack Integration in your Enterprise.

At Boxworks 2023 we announced the upcoming availability of Box AI for Slack, which will bring Box AI directly into Slack channels. In preparation for the general availability of these capabilities in the Box for Slack integration, all users will start to see the following two new shortcuts in Slack (pictured below) beginning April 11th: Ask Box AI Remove Box AI Response If a user tries to use these shortcuts prior to Box AI for Slack being generally available, they will receive the following message “Box AI for Slack is not available at your enterprise.” Please note that once Box AI for Slack becomes generally available (currently planned for Q2 FY25), no Box AI features will be available to Box for Slack users without being directly enabled by a Box Admin. If a user without access to Box AI for Slack prompts the shortcut they will receive a message based on the availability of the feature at their enterprise. Learn more about Box AI here.

Box is committed to connecting your content in impactful ways, where it matters most. By working with Slack to provide interoperability between Box and Slack, we have established Box as the Content Layer for Slack, a powerful addition to Box for Slack which allows customers using Slack Custom File Store to upload files to Slack channels and have them store directly back to Box mapped folders. We’re excited to announce the continued growth of Box content in Slack with a new upcoming feature available in Box for Slack for customers using Box as the Content Layer for Slack.  With new full dynamic previews, built by Slack, joint customers can: Preview and scroll a high-resolution version of the entire document (pdf, .docx, spreadsheet, slides, etc…) directly in your Slack channel View the most recent version of a document as changes are made Open a previewed document directly to the Box web-app to view and edit the file The activation of the Box as the Content Layer for Slack (using Box for Slack Custom File Store) requires admin level setup in Admin Console > Apps > Apps & Integrations section, as well as configuration on the Slack side (please contact Slack Support for help). We encourage sandbox environment rollout stage in order to review what changes Custom File Store feature brings. Find more information on Box as the Content Layer for Slack here.

Currently when a user of the Box for Slack app posts a Box file link in Slack, the integration unfurls a content card which contains a filename and optionally a thumbnail of the document. It is also possible to set the integration to upload a textual representation of the document to Slack to be used within its search index.     However, the filename, thumbnail, or text contents of a file in Box may change after it has been shared in Slack. Therefore we have added Content Sync, a way to keep content cards updated after someone makes a change to the underlying Box file. With this, Box file representation in Slack will be updated for one year after the last time it was shared. This feature will require Admin activation. Support documentation detailing how to activate this is available within the article Deploying the Slack integration in Your Enterprise.

Box is committed to creating a seamless experience no matter where your content is surfaced. Previously, Box customers have used the Share with Slack integration to share files from the Box web-app to Slack via a sidebar button. Now, the improved version of this feature is coming to the Box for Slack integration in conjunction with the EOL of Share with Slack. This enhanced feature will allow customers using Box for Slack to: Quickly share a Box file link via a button on the Box web-app sidebar. Preview and edit a message containing the Box file link directly in Slack Enable a Box file to be shared to multiple Slack conversations Provide more options to manage access permissions for the shared file   This feature has become available starting the week of October 30, 2023. If you currently have the Box for Slack integration available, its new Share with Slack from Box Web capability will be automatically activated for you, replacing the end-of-life’d Share with Slack. This automatic migration is performed over November and December 2023. You can use the [Admin Console > Integrations > Individual Integration Controls > Box for Slack] in order to opt out / opt in for the entire organization or Box Integrations to switch it off / on for your individual user account. If you’re interested in learning more about the EOL and migration of Share with Slack, please read the announcement here.
