I recently bought a years personal subscription to Box solely to be able to share 30min recorded video interviews for collaboration. Did I miss something during signup about mp4 video files will play only for business customers? In this context, are preview and play equivalent?

That is correct. Video preview is available only to Business level Box accounts, and above. If you use a free or personal Box account, you can still preview video files owned by Business Plus-level accounts and above.
