Hi there,

Is there a way you can set preferences for shared documents so that if you have two people working on the same document, the first person has read/write and any additional people who open the document only have 'read' access?

    Welcome to the Box Community!

    We have released an update in Box Drive in June 2021 with the following feature enhancements:

    Enhanced Lock/Unlock for Office files [Windows] - Enhanced lock/unlock can now be enabled on Box Drive. After enabling this feature, Office files will be locked (or) unlocked when the user opens (or) closes the document. This helps improve the collaboration experience for files on Box Drive by reducing the number of conflict copies and the need to merge them.

    Hi Jodie, 

    Unfortunately, it looks this enhanced lock/ unlock feature is only applied on Box Drive and not Box Sync app.

    Users may still use the lock/ unlock feature, however the user experience would be different:

    From Your Desktop With Box Sync

    You can also lock and unlock files directly from your desktop using Box Sync.

    • To lock a file, right click on the name of the file in your Box Sync folder, navigate to Box Sync, and select Lock. A lock icon will appear over the file icon to indicate that the file has been locked.
    • When you lock a file from your desktop, a lock icon indicating that the file is locked will also appear to the left of the file's name in the web application.
    • Once you have finished your work, simply right click on the name of the locked file, navigate to Box Sync, and select Unlock. If you forget to do so, any other collaborator who has editing capabilities is also able to unlock the file.

    If you need to concurrently edit a document, you can use our Office Online integration to collaborate on Microsoft Office documents in real-time. Box Notes and Google Documents can also be edited with others in real-time.
