Details:
If you are on an older version of Box Tools (v4.16.0 or below), the upcoming updates to Google Chrome (v102, releasing May 24th, 2022) and Microsoft Edge (v102, release May 26th, 2022) will prevent you from opening files using the "Open" button in Box web or logging in to Box web if Device Trust is enabled. This is due to the inclusion of Private Network Access pre-flight security enhancement that has been implemented in the above-mentioned Chrome and Edge updates.
Action:
- If the version of Box Tools installed on your machine is below v4.16.1.911, please download and install the latest Windows Box Tools installer from here.
-
Use the following steps to find the version number of the Tools application installed in your machine
- Press the Windows Key, search for Add or Remove Programs, and open it.
- Search for Box Tools and click on it to see the version number of the application

Background: Avoiding incompatibility with upcoming update of Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge browsers.
Chrome 98 introduced a new Private Network Access extension aimed at improving security. This changed how Chrome makes requests to Box Tools, and unfortunately triggered a bug in Box Tools, breaking the integration with box.com. The end result was that:
-
Users in enterprises with Device Trust enabled were unable to log into box.com. After authenticating, the login flow would become stuck waiting for Device Trust checks to execute.
-
The “Open” button on the web was grayed out.
Since then Google has rolled back this change but will be introducing this change again in the upcoming version (v102 releasing May 24th, 2022).
We released a Windows only hotfix version of Box Tools (v4.16.1) on Feb 16th, 2022 to fix this compatibility issues with Chrome’s Private Network Access extension.
Without updating to the latest version of Box Tools you will be impacted by this bug that will prevent you from natively opening Box files from Google Chrome(v 102) and Microsoft Edge browsers.
