Were you able to resolve this? I have the same question: I would like to collaborate on a software development project with box.com hosting the repository, but am unclear on whether or not that is possible.

&  Just wanted to clarify your question. Are you looking for a way to progamatically store a Git repo within a Box folder?

I am looking to provide the same service as github in hosting a shared
repository that, for example, collaborators can push to without concerns
that one will overwrite the other's push operations if they both push
    simultaneously.

    I have the same question.

I would simply like to be able to host a git repo on Box.  I can easily use my local filesystem; I can just as easily use a remote filesystem (e.g. "git clone ssh://myuser@/my/path/MyProject.git") or DropBox (which stores files locally).
Q:  Is there a way to use a Box folder as a Git repo?
