    Hi Dominic,

    Welcome to the Box Community!

At present, there is no way to customize the permissions you can set in Box and it will always follow the waterfall design.

If this is something you would like to be able to do, I would highly recommend submitting this feature request at pulse.box.com or add your vote to an existing feature request of the same idea like this one: Customize Collaborator Permission Levels

Our product managers review these requests and take them into consideration for future product development.

Thanks for your post and participation in the forum!

There is already a feature request to be able to break the waterfall premission structure. It was posted in 2016. Box Dev team should revisit this feature request.

I just started looking into folder permissions and need to give users access to view many folders and files in a directory, but also need to allow those users to edit files within subfolders in that same directory. I am legitimately shocked that this isn't possible with Box. I don't believe it's accurate to call Box folder structure a "waterfall" when the permissions jump or "flow" back up to parent folder when I try to change permissions in a subfolder.
