File Length/Path Exceeded
I have created a directory structure on my PC and would like to upload it to Box to use as a template for others and as the directory structure for our organization. The structure exists fine on my PC, but when I went to copy it to the cloud, I received a notice saying that multiple files had file names that are too long. So what is the character limit for the pathways from my workspace? Character limit for file names? etc.

Hi Scott,
Welcome to the Box Community, I'm happy to help!
Have you checked out this article on Troubleshooting uploads in Box? https://support.box.com/hc/en-us/articles/360044196773-Troubleshooting-Uploads-to-Box
Specifically this item:
- Verify that the file's name is valid. Box only supports file or folder names that are 255 characters or less. File names containing non-printable ascii, "/" or "\", names with leading or trailing spaces, and the special names “.” and “..” are also unsupported. Box supports only Unicode Basic Multilingual Plane (BMP) characters in file and folder names.
- Verify that the file or folder's path on Windows machines is under the 255-character Windows limitation. Folder paths that exceed 255 characters may truncate the content's name before uploading to Box.
Hope this helps! Let us know how else we can help or if you have other questions.
All the Best,
-
Windows does NOT have a 255 character limit. File Explorer specifically does. If you use an alternative file browser that limit no longer exists. Box Drive should honor the Operating System rather than the file browser. Box also allows much longer file paths and access via iOS Box app, the web interface and others. Please allow Box Drive to do the same.
