You can enable it but keep it managed by admins. See Recommended Configuration #1 at the link above.

Y'all are making me nervous here... Are there plans to stop supporting Box for Salesforce altogether? Or is this just a dramatic way of urging us to keep our installation up to date?

Oh wow, that totally works! Too bad dav.box.com is being turned off in a few weeks. 😞I tried ftps, but it seems Excel doesn't support that.
