Two Factor Authentication Issues

I wanted to upgrade my 2FA by using an authenticator app. The QR code never showed up, so then when I wanted to revert to doing it via SMS, it wouldn't allow it as it said my number was invalid. I figured maybe if I do through the app it can help solve that but there was no option to do so. Please advise
