We made some improvements to the Box Tools experience for Safari browser users over the next couple releases. The changes will be released in two phases:
1) Improvements to the Box Tools Safari extension
2) Improvements to the Box Tools installation experience for Safari users
1) Improvements to the Box Tools Safari extension
Box Tools when used via the Safari browser requires a Safari extension to be enabled to provide the proper access for Box Tools to operate. Today we provide a single Box Tools extension that is used for any entry point into Box Tools, whether it be through the Box web app or through the Box Embed widget. As a result of these different entry points, we were previously required to scope the extension with a broader set of extension permissions. This was largely required in order to grant access to Box Tools via the Box Embed widget.
There have been enhancements made to the Safari extension which now enable us to minimize access required for the extension to the single domain that we require access to (Box.com). The new limited scope of the extension will be communicated to users via the Safari extension preferences panel. This change is targeted for mid-March.
2) Improvements to the Box Tools installation experience for Safari users
The process today of enabling the Safari extension is very manual and not completely intuitive. We are planning to improve the experience for enabling the extension by making it more clear to users in the installation flow that this extension is required for Safari users and also providing a simple one-click option that will cross-launch the Safari preferences panel so users can quickly and easily enable the extension. This change is targeted in April.
