Box Drive on macOS File Provider Extension (FPE): Known Issues

  • The Make alias context menu option doesn't work as expected when Box Drive is in FPE mode: the created alias fails to open.
  • Box Drive in FPE mode doesn't support canceling a download from Finder.

  • Box Drive File Provider Extension mode in macOS generates spurious conflict copies of 0 byte files. Upgrading to Box Drive v2.26.348 will fix this issue and keep these conflict copies from spuriously multiplying.

  • Box Drive doesn't support Time Machine or similar software to backup to your cloud storage location. Restoring your storage location from such software can cause duplication of your Box files and folders. While support is coming for backup software, here are alternatives to avoid duplication while backing up your content:

    • If you manually back up your machine, log out from Box Drive before making the backup, then follow the instructions here.

    • If you automatically back up your machine, exclude these three folders from being backed up:

      ~/Library/Application Support/FileProvider
      ~/Library/Application Support/Box/Box
      ~/Library/CloudStorage/Box-Box/

    • If you encounter this duplication on restoring your data from the backup software, manually reset Box Drive by following the instructions here to avoid further duplication.
