Overview of Problem
Users with Editor access on a folder may find that they are unable to add the folder to a Box Hub. This issue occurs when the folder has a specific collaboration restriction enabled, preventing Editors from adding the folder to a Hub. This affects the ability to manage and organize content within Box Hubs.
Process for Resolution
- Verify User Role on the Folder
- Confirm the user’s collaboration role on the folder (Owner, Co-owner, Editor).
- Check Folder Collaboration Restrictions
- Open the folder in Box.
- Click Folder settings → go to Collaboration → Invitation Restrictions.
- Look for the checkbox labeled: Only folder owners and co-owners can send collaborator invites and add this folder to a Hub.
- If the checkbox is enabled (checked), only the folder Owner or Co-owner can add the folder to a Hub — Editors cannot.
- If the checkbox is disabled (unchecked), Editors (and other permitted roles) that meet the Hub’s requirements can add the folder.
- Remedial Actions (if change is desired)
- If you want Editors to be able to add the folder to a Hub, have an Owner or Co-owner open Folder settings and uncheck the invitation restriction.
- Alternatively, have an Owner or Co-owner add the folder to the Hub on behalf of the Editor.
Outcome
- Users with Editor access on a folder should be able to successfully add the folder to the hub.
Alternatives
- Workaround: Elevate Editor users to Co-owner for the affected folders to enable adding to Hubs.
- Permanent Remediation: Disable the folder restriction on the relevant folders (or on the parent folder if the setting should apply to all descendants and is inherited).
- Bulk Updates: For large numbers of folders, perform bulk updates programmatically (Box API) or plan scripted automation.
- Escalation: If you continue to experience any of the symptoms listed above, collect a HAR network capture while reproducing the error, then open a support ticket at support.box.com for further assistance.
