Overwriting folders in Finder Not Working / Syncing
Answered
Hi there,
When I overwrite a folder in the finder using Box Drive, the folder will not update online.
On my local system, the folder shows as "Item is not saved to Box." with the dotted line cloud icon.
And on the web interface, the original folder remains and now sees unable to sync back down to my local machine, even if I delete the folder that would not sync on the local side. It's almost as if this action completely breaks the link between the online and local version and creates some sort of sync conflict that stays in an unresolved state.
The only solutions I've found is to completely delete the folder on bot sides, log out of Box Drive, log back in and re-upload. OR, to upload through the web interface, but that option is not convenient for me.
This is a new issue for me. Overwriting folders used to work just fine. I'm not sure when it stated, but now that I've noticed it, it is pretty consistent. I've completely uninstalled and re-installed the Box.com client software.
I'm running MacOS 13.2.1 and Box Drive 2.31.64.

Hi Eric,
Welcome to Box Community and glad to help!
To possibly fix this issue, kindly reset your Box Drive application manually:
To manually reset Box Drive on a Mac (File Provider Extension mode)
- Quit Box Drive if it's currently running.
- Open a Terminal window and run the following command:
fileproviderctl domain remove -A com.box.desktop.boxfileprovider; defaults delete com.box.desktop; rm -rf ~/Library/Application\ Support/Box/Box
This command will:
- Archive all files that are not synced (not uploaded to Box) from "~/Library/CloudStorage/Box-Box" and move it to a new folder at "~/Box-Box (Archive)
Note
If you already have a "~/Box-Box (Archive)" folder from a previous manual reset, the folder will be named "~/Box-Box (Archive) 2", or if that name is already taken, "~/Box-Box (Archive) 3", and so on.
- Exclude from the above archive files that are “up-to-date” or synced on Box
- Re-create the parent hierarchy of the archived files
- Archive all files that are not synced (not uploaded to Box) from "~/Library/CloudStorage/Box-Box" and move it to a new folder at "~/Box-Box (Archive)
- Restart Box Drive and follow the prompt to log back in.
Hope it helps and happy weekend!

Rona,
Thank you for the suggestion. Unfortunately I have already tried this a number of times, and while it does clean up any unsynced folders, it does not fix the overall problem.
I'll keep searching for a solution.
Of note, many of my co-workers are experiencing this same behavior on their machines. All all Apple Silicon machines, leading be to suspect that this might be a bug.
