can't open a box link from another university
I have Box at NYU and can login just fine. However, I can't open a Box link ([personal information--redacted]) from Brandeis University.

It looks like the link is set to only allow "invited collaborators" with access. This means only people that have been invited to collaborate in that folder may access the content using this link. You would need to reach out to the owner of that link or the person who shared it to you and request if they can change the link access to something less restrictive such as "People with the link" or invite you as a collaborator in it.
