If login activity emails are enabled in your account, Box sends “Box login from {application_name}” the first time you sign in from a new device or app. This article explains when that notification is sent and why it can sometimes feel like it arrives often.
What is this email?
Box sends this email when an application or connection is newly added to your login activity list. That often happens the first time you use a browser or app you have not used with Box before, or when you sign in from a private or incognito window (because Box may treat that session as a new device).
The message is a security notification so you can confirm that you recognize the app and the approximate time and location of the sign-in.
Why am I getting this email when I’m on a device I’ve used before?
In general, Box sends this notification when the sign-in looks like it is coming from a new device in your login activity.
Web browser: Activity is often tied to browser cookies. If your browser is set to clear cookies when you close it, Box may treat each new session as a new device. In that case, you might get this email each time you open the browser and sign in to Box again.
Apps and API access: The first token request for an app usually registers as a new application connection in login activity. After that, routine token refresh (when an app quietly renews access with a refresh token) is not meant to trigger this email.
Some integrations are built differently. They may run through a full authorization flow (similar to going through Authorize again and getting a new grant) more often than a single “first-time” connection. For example, a web integration that requests a new token using an authorization code every time you open it from Box can cause this notification whenever you use that integration. If you started that activity, you can safely ignore the email. If you did not add the app and do not recognize the activity, use the link in the email or your Security settings to remove the app and consider changing your password and contacting your administrator.
