Issue
When attempting to sign in to Box for Android on an Android device, the following message may appear in the in-app browser, preventing the user from signing in: “Chrome not available. Browser certificates will not work.”
This issue occurs on Android devices that use an Intune-managed work profile.
Root Cause
This issue may occur when Chrome, required to open the authentication screen, cannot be used properly within the work profile.
Box for Android uses Chrome on Android devices to open the sign-in screen during authentication.
As a result, in the following cases, the browser certificate or client certificate may not work correctly, causing sign-in to fail:
- Chrome is not installed within the work profile.
- Chrome is disabled within the work profile.
- Use of Chrome is restricted by Mobile Device Management (MDM) or app protection policies.
Resolution
Check the following items in order.
- Check whether Chrome is installed within the work profile
- On the Android device, open Settings.
- Open Apps.
- Check the list of apps installed in the work profile.
- Check whether Chrome is displayed.
- Check whether Chrome is enabled
- Even if Chrome is displayed, sign-in may fail if Chrome is disabled.
- Open the app information for Chrome, and check whether Chrome is enabled.
- If Chrome is disabled, enable it.
- Check the management policy
- If Chrome cannot be found or cannot be enabled, the organization’s management settings may be affecting the device.
- Have the IT administrator check Intune, related app protection policies, and device management policies.
- Specifically, check whether the installation or launch of Chrome is restricted within the work profile.
- Make Chrome available as needed
- If Chrome is not installed within the work profile, add it according to the organization’s management procedures.
- If Chrome is already installed, make sure that it remains enabled and is not restricted.
