We will soon be introducing the ability to manually create or leverage the power of AI to automatically generate metadata templates directly within Box Extract. This new capability allows admins and co-admins to create metadata templates directly within Custom Extract Agent builder, without leaving Box Extract. Instead of switching over to the admin console manually create templates, configure individual fields within those templates, activate those templates, and then returning to Box Extract to continue setup, teams can now stay in one streamlined experience from start to finish.
While configuring a Custom Extract Agent, admins and co-admins can select up to 10 reference files from Box. Box AI then analyzes those files and automatically creates a metadata template based on the content within those 10 files. Admins and co-admins can review the suggested fields, edit field properties, modify AI-powered extraction instructions for each filed, add new fields, or remove anything they do not need before saving. Admins and co-admins can also name or rename the metadata template. Once saved, the template is automatically saved within the admin console and can be applied immediately to the Custom Extract Agent.
The result is a faster path from setup to value. By reducing the friction of template creation, Box Extract helps teams get extraction workflows up and running more quickly, lowers the burden on admins and co-admins, and makes it easier to tailor metadata schemas to real-world document types.
In addition to AI-recommended creation, the release also supports manual template creation inline within Box Extract. Admins and co-admins can define fields directly in the product, choose from supported field types such as text, number, date, enum, and multi-select dropdown, and optionally add AI instructions to improve extraction accuracy for specific fields.
Templates created in Box Extract are immediately visible in the admin console and available enterprise-wide across Box products, helping organizations manage metadata consistently across Box Extract, Box Apps, Box Automate, and more. Non-admin users can also browse and apply existing enterprise templates when configuring a Custom Extract Agent, making it easier to start extracting metadata without needing to build a template from scratch.
