    Hi ,

Thank you for posting in Box's Community Forum!

You might want to go over this link for some background information on Box Edit.

    Regarding your question --

Box Edit uses the default application installed on your computer to open and editfiles: Docx files open in Microsoft Word, PPTx files open in Microsoft PowerPoint, Xlsx files open in Excel, and so forth.

    • If you change the default program Box Edit utilizes, Box Edit will then open with that new program. This link explains how you can adjust the default program per OS.

    I hope this helps!

    Best,

    James - Box Support

This "solution" does not restore the option to Open with Excel.  All files types are pointing to the correct office program and Box still does not give the option to Open with Excel.

Is the behavior the same when you try in a different web browser?

I am having the same exact issue as well as all of my collaborators, it's like the option to open the file went away overnight.

Also, I'm not sure if this is related but some of my collaborators are starting to have issues with not being able to save files when opened up from their sync file. The files which are suppose to be synced are giving a read only error when they click the save button. It is wanting to force them to change the file name rather than save over previous versions. No permissions have been changed in our admin console.

    Hi

Have you checked out the links and suggestions from previous threads from James?

    Have you also reinstalled Excel?

Appreciate your clarification on what you're seeing!

I am having the same issue on Win 10 Pro and all of the default apps are linked correctly to corresponding MS Office programs. And yes I tried all of the links. Does it make a difference if I am using Office 365?

I have reinstalled Box Edit five times.

I was having the same problem with suddenly not being able to open any of the MS Office documents (Word, Excel, Power Point) with the respective MS Office programme... the only option I was given was to open the document using the "online" programme. This was when I was while using the standard internet web browser. I have subsequently discovered that if I use Google Chrome then all the functionality of the Box Edit tools becomes available and I can now open the documents using the MS Office programs on my computer.

My recommendation is therefore to launch Google Chrome, login to Box.Com, try opeing an MS Office document and see if the problem is resolved.

    Good luck

    Andrew

This solution did not work for me. Still have only excel online option. My apps worked perfectly late last night. Disappeared over night as several users described.

I have the default program for .cvs files set to Excel and they still don't open in Excel using Box edit.  I have to download them to open them in Excel.  Any other suggestions???

Does it just give no "open in..." suggestions?

Correct, no "Open With" option for all microsoft and adobe software. I can still open the files when navigating from the program, it's just a pain in the butt when making changes to many files. Instead I'm getting "Excel online" or "Adobe Sign" as my options, which isn't what I need. Thanks!

I have the same problem of no "Open With Excel" and it is the same on Chrome or IE. I use Windows 10 Pro, but I believe this problem also existed on my previous PC that was running Windows 7.  The problem is most acute when I reboot my laptop. It's like Box forgets what the PC has or it's configuration and a few hours later it starts showing "Open With Excel/PowerPoint/etc", but not always consistently.  Some Excel files (xlsx for the most part) have "Open With Excel" and some have just "Open with Excel Online".  I have reloaded "Box Edit" 20 times if I've loaded it once and it does not seem to make a difference, although lately Box does not ask for me to download it again because it does not detect it.  I work for GE and Box is the standard cloud storage tool so I would expect that all network issues have been identified and resolved at the corporate level.

    Hi ,

I would recommend submitting Box Edit logs and contacting Box Support or have your IT admin submit a ticket on your behalf.

This could be an issue with the set up with Box Edit on your machine or the configuration, but our support team will be able to help identify this with you.

Thanks Howard.  I will follow up on this issue as you suggest.   How do we pull up the logs?

The good news is that eventually it starts working again, with the right number of repeat Box Edit downloads, Box Sync starts, repeated attempts to check results, and praying! ?

    Thanks again.

    Hey Louie ,

Check out this article on how to collect Box Edit logs.

    https://community.box.com/t5/Box-Edit-Troubleshooting/Collecting-Box-Edit-Logs/ta-p/364

I'm glad it eventually does work for you, but yeah we can definitely do better and skip the repeat clicks and hail mary's!

Let me or the community know if you need anything else!

Was there ever a solution on this?  My option to "Open in Excel" disappeared overnight as well.  My browser is full up-to-date.

A few days ago this worked fine for me. Right-clicking a Word document on box gave me the options to open with Word Online, and with Word installed locally on my computer. Today, I only get the option to use Word Online. Also, previously I could choose to open pdfs with the Xodo pdf viewer, there is no longer any option to "Open with..." Even txt-files no longer have any option to "Open with..." What goes on?

Double-clicking files in Windows Explorer opens them just fine in the expected default app. And checking the default apps in W10 settings shows everything just as expected.

Like someone else here said, this changed overnight.

    Hi ,

Thanks for your post in the community!

Sorry to hear about the issue with the missing option "Open with..." when trying to open your files using your local MS Excel application.

Your post seems like it may require account specific information/configuration to help solve it. If so, you should contact Box Support to help you directly.

If you'd like to continue troubleshooting with the community, could you provide more details or screenshot soour members can take a closer look?

This is W10x64pro (1803), the latest Chrome version but it is the same in Firefox. And it is just not Excel files, it is the same for Word files, here is a screen cap.BoxOpenWith.png

Previously there were two options, both Word Online, and Word 2010. Double-clicking a docx-file in Win Explorer opens the file in Word 2010. For Excel and Powerpoint files, it is the same; no option to open with may locally installed MS Excel/Powerpoint 2010.

For pdfs there is no longer even any option to Open With...BoxOpenWith2.png

Here there previously used to be an option to "Open with..." that allowed me to send the document to the Xodo PDF viewer. Again, double-clicking a pdf in Win Explorer opens the file in Xodo. And it is the same problem with txt-files, no option to Open With... but previously there was the option to open txt-files in TextPad, which is what happens when I double-click a text-file in Win Explorer.

All of the connections to my locally installed apps seem to have disappeared; png, jpg, gif etc files open locally in Irfanview, but no longer any Open With... when right-clicked in Box; docx, pptx, xlsx open locally with the respective MS Office 2010 apps, but no option for that when right-clicked in box.

So, default apps are correctly set locally and previously work4ed fine, but the connections over Box Edit now seem to be lost. And, "previously" means just a few days ago.

Clicking the "Open" button when previewing a file tells me I have to install Box Tools to be able to open the file locally. BoxToolsInstall.png

BoxEditInstalled.pngSo  I did that and now it appears to work. The strange thing is, when I looked at my settings and what apps I had installed, Box told me that I had Box Edit installed already (see the picture, this looked exactly the same before and after reinstalling Box Tools). Anyway, I reinstalled the whole thing and now it seems to be back to what it was. How Box Edit got uninstalled I have no idea. Some W10 update, I guess.
