We're excited to announce several new capabilities coming soon to Box Doc Gen that expand how organizations generate documents directly within Box using the API and Box Automate.
PPT Generation from a PPT Template via API
Box Doc Gen will soon support PowerPoint (.pptx) templates, extending document generation beyond Word and PDF to slide-based content.
Customers can upload .pptx files as Doc Gen templates, define dynamic placeholders using the same familiar {{variable}} syntax, and generate fully populated PowerPoint files via the Doc Gen API.
With this release, you will be able to:
- Use .pptx files as Doc Gen templates: Upload and mark them as templates
- Replace text placeholders in slide shapes, tables, and word art with dynamic values
- Generate .pptx output files with placeholders replaced by user-supplied data
This enables new document generation use cases for teams that rely on presentation-based deliverables, proposals, and reports.
HTML-Based Doc Gen API
Box Doc Gen will soon support HTML files as document generation templates, enabling customers to generate HTML or PDF output from an HTML template with dynamic {{tag}} placeholders and embedded image support via the Doc Gen API.
With HTML-based Doc Gen, you can:
- Mark a HTML file as a Doc Gen template in Box
- Preview tags in the Doc Gen UI or retrieve them via the Get Tags API
- Generate HTML or PDF documents by supplying tag values through the Doc Gen API
This is particularly valuable for companies that generate certificates, licenses, and other structured documents from HTML-based templates.
PDF Template-Based Doc Gen API
Box Doc Gen now enables customers to generate regulatory and compliance documents from fillable PDF templates via the Doc Gen API. Using existing PDF forms, customers can dynamically populate field values and produce completed documents at scale.
With PDF template-based Doc Gen, you can:
- Use any fillable PDF form as a Doc Gen template
- Mark the PDF as a Doc Gen template in Box via the ellipsis menu or directly within the Automate tab
- Generate documents via the Doc Gen API
- Pull data from internal systems or Box Forms to populate documents automatically
This capability is useful for compliance-heavy industries that need to generate standardized documents from fillable PDF templates at scale and with full Box governance.
PDF & PPTX Templates in Box Automate
Box Doc Gen will soon support PDF and PPTX template-based document generation natively within Box Automate. An update to the Generate Document Outcome in Automate will allow Business teams to trigger PDF or PPTX document generation as part of a workflow.
This unlocks new automation use cases for operations, compliance, and business teams who need to generate regulatory or structured documents in a PDF or PPTX format as part of a larger, end-to-end workflow.
These updates will be available to Box Doc Gen customers. Visit the Box Developer Docs to learn more about the Box Doc Gen API.
