We are excited to announce that Box Doc Gen will soon support rendering HTML tables directly within generated documents. When your JSON data includes a <table> element, Box Doc Gen reads it as rich text and automatically builds a cleanly formatted table in your output document.
This update builds on our existing rich text capabilities, which already support bold, italic, underline, line breaks, paragraphs, hyperlinks (anchors), and inline images, by adding full HTML table support.
Why It Matters
Previously, including a table in a generated document required defining dynamic table structures in the template using tablerow tags. While effective for repeating data arrays, this approach required the table structure to be predefined in advance.
With this new capability, you can now pass a complete, dynamically structured table as HTML inside a single field, and Box Doc Gen will format and render it seamlessly.
Key Use Cases
Tables from Upstream Systems & Rich Text Editors
Incorporate tables generated by external editors, upstream business applications, or embedded inside longer rich text fields (such as descriptions or summaries). The table renders inline alongside surrounding text without requiring separate template sections.- Transform Document Insights into Tables using a Box Agent in Box Automate:
Extract key insights from source files using a Box Agent outcome within Box Automate and present them in structured tabular form. Box Agents can output extracted information, such as invoice line items, milestone dates, or contractual obligations, as an HTML table that Box Doc Gen renders directly into your summary report.
How It Works
- Add a Tag: Place a standard text tag in your template, such as
{{invoice.summary}}. - Pass HTML in JSON: Include the HTML
<table>markup within that field in your JSON payload:
{
"invoice": {
"summary": "<table><tr><td>Name</td><td>Qty</td></tr><tr><td>A4 Papers</td><td>100</td></tr><tr><td>Ink cartridge</td><td>40</td></tr><tr><td>Adhesive tape</td><td>20</td></tr></table>"
}
}
- Render Output: Box Doc Gen automatically renders the HTML payload as a formatted table:
Name | Qty |
|---|---|
| A4 Papers | 100 |
| Ink cartridge | 40 |
| Adhesive tape | 20 |
Getting Started
No template redesigns are required beyond adding standard text tags. Any existing tag that receives an HTML <table> in its JSON payload will automatically render as a table.
Availability
HTML table support in Doc Gen will soon be available. More details and documentation will added once it is generally available.
