We’re adding new tools to the Box MCP Server that let AI agents work with file operations directly in Box. Agents will be able to review how a file has changed, restore an earlier version, and assign follow-up work to the right people, all without leaving the conversation.
File versions
- List File Versions: List a file’s version history, including the version IDs used by the tools below.
- Promote File Version (default off): Restore a previous version as the current version of a file.
- Version support in Get File Content and Get Download URL: Read or download a specific version of a file by its version ID.
Tasks
- Create Task: Create a task on a file and assign it to a collaborator.
- Update Task (default off): Change a task’s details or reassign it to someone else.
Example workflows
- “Compare the current contract with last week’s version and summarize what changed.”
- “The latest edit broke the template. Restore the previous version.”
- “Assign a review task on this proposal to Jordan, due Friday.”
Rollout and availability
Once released, these tools will be available to all enterprises with the Box MCP Server enabled. To keep your content safe, tools that can change or overwrite existing content (Promote File Version and Update Task) will be turned off by default. Box admins can choose to turn them on in the Admin Console at any time.
