Sort by Name (specifically, number) sorts incorrectly

    I have this problem too. I'm uploading photos, and they have to be in a certain order to make sense. I do this by putting numbers in the file name.

     

    Mine come out a little differently than Ruslan's. 1, 2, 3,...,10, 11,..., 20, 21 appear in Box as 1, 10, 11,..., 19, 2, 20, 21,...29, 3, 31,... . How can I fix this? Putting leading zeros on all numbers is a solution. But this is impractical, as I have thousands of files to change, and my numbering software doesn't allow leading zeros. Is there third-party software that will go through files in a directory structure and add leading zeros to all numbers?

     

    Is there another solution while Box's product team sorts it out? (It may take them a while if their unusual numbering system is by design.)

    Agree a change is needed. Sorting a list of PPT presentations in the order they were given the #10 presentation appears ahead of #01.

     

    If sorted in reverse order by name, the order is #10, #09, #08, etc.

     

    Doesnt make sense.

    What is the design idea?  We use dates in the name to sort and this is causing a real issue.  Is this something that Box is even looking into either fixing or giving people different options for number sorting?

    Well I tried Google Drive and named 4 files as follows. Please see the difference in Box.com and Google Drive. My requirement was when 2 such folders exist and when i filter by "stk" i need to see all items in 2 different folders and then sort by name to get a price sorted list. Google Drive is able to deliver me with the results when the search is within a folder but not while searching among 2 folders, while Box.com is not even able to do within a folder proper sort by name.

    Looking forward to see this feature corrected soon. If this feature is done then I think box.com is ahead of Google Drive. Awaiting the break through !!

    Your number sorting system is in direct contrast to how numbers are generally sorted (which is in order from greatest to least or least to greatest based on the full number value). This is causing problems in our work flow. We are working on a project currently which includes numbered image files. We need the images sorted in order to effectively process the next step and currently are experiencing a situation where image 5.5, for example, is placed above 193 because it starts with a "5."

     

    It's okay to have an alternate numbering system, but there needs to be an option to use it rather than the default.

    I'm a historian sorting literally thousands of documents, and you're telling me that I have to go back through and put a placeholder 0 in front of hundreds of images? That's unsustainable. Why has this not been fixed?

    Agreed. This method of sorting is in direct contrast with common file sorting. Uploading files from our server puts all of these files out of order because, as is common, our computers sort 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, and so forth... I don't understand why this method of sorting was chosen, and why there is no option to change it in the settings. This is causing us problems and I don't see a good solution to solve it. It will either be sorted wrong on our server or sorted wrong on Box.

    It appears the issue I am having is identical to most of the others who've brought this up steadily over the last four years. What a shame. I have so much data that needs to be organized by date in order for it to be the most effective in our storage of the data. While I can query with the search functionality, we need to see things in date order to approach work projects seamlessly. Is there any idea on whether this will ever get addressed?

    Same issue. This is a stupid problem to have to deal with.

    I am sharing folders with clients and they look like a confusing mess because they are all out of order. Makes our company look bad.

    Here's what I did: For ordering a Box folder's data by date I used two digit month, day, year. 01_01_20 = 1 January 20. Note: I HAD to use two digits for the months because after 9, the 10,11,12, etc, would rise to the top. Then hit the "name" button at the top -- that listed in ascending or descending, which ever I needed. This is the only work around I could come up with.

    Unbelievably stupid that this sorting method is by design. It helps no one. "Add a 0 in front" is not a workable solution for mass amounts of files if the case arises. Can't believe a mainstream software company would do this to users in the 21st century.

    This is unacceptable. I just switched from Box Sync to Box Drive and now all my meticulously named folders (using a 0 in front!!) are in a nonsensical order when I sort by Name. I can't further edit folder names as hundreds of design files are linked to various sources across multiple team members. Box, what is the solution???
