Nov 26, 2023 Update - Min version of Box Drive that supports external browser login is v2.35
We've updated the login experience for Box Drive. This update uses the default browser on the device to complete the login experience. If a user is running Box Drive v2.35 or higher, they will be directed to the browser when they click on login in Box Drive. This upgrade provides a smooth single sign on user experience and enables support for newer security protocols when those are supported by the Box login / SSO providers.
We recommend all customers who have Box Drive and Device Trust enabled, review the requirements (below) and take the required steps to avoid any service disruption to users. Specifically, if you have Device Trust checks enabled for the Box Drive end point, (see toggle on in image below), Box Tools must also be installed. If the user already has Box Tools installed, no additional updates are required. If the user does not have Box Tools installed, you will need to install the latest Box Tools per the requirements below.
Enhancement
Our primary goal with this release is to ensure that we are continuing to provide the most seamless and secure login experience for customers and users. By switching Box Drive to a browser for login, we leverage both support for Box login and SSO providers on the web browser and can automatically support the latest security enhancements, such as, FIDO2 protocols or hardware tokens.

To avoid any service disruption for your users, please take the following actions prior to the mid-August notice of automatic upgrade of Box Drive:

For Device Trust enabled organizations, for users who do not have Box Tools already installed, Box Tools v4.22 or later is required. Specifically, if you have Device Trust checks enabled for the Box Drive end point, (see toggle on image above), you will need to install the latest Box Tools per the requirements below.

To complete login, your Box Drive users will require Box Tools to perform the Device Trust checks. If the user does not have Box Tools, when logging in, the Device Trust check will fail and inform the user that they will need Box Tools to complete login.

End user experience
Step 1 |
When user is not logged in and opens Box Drive, they will see the following screen
Note: If the user is already logged into Box Drive, the users experience won’t change until the next time they log in to Box Drive, the experience will follow these four steps. |

Step 2 |
Upon clicking “Log In,” user will be directed to the browser asking for their credentials.
The default browser will be opened for this. If the browser is already open, then a new tab is opened. |

Step 3 |
Once user enters their username, they will be redirected to the password page or the SSO page, if configured.
Once login is successful, user will be asked to open the Box Drive application from the browser. Then Click on “Open Box” when prompted to do so. |

Step 4 |
User is now successfully logged in to Box Drive. Box Drive will start running in the background and Finder will be opened to show their Box Drive folder.
If login is not successful, user will not see the “Open Box” pop-up and will have to restart from Step 1. |
Additionally,
If admin/user have not installed Box Tools prior to the release. |
User will see an error message and be prompted to install Box Tools to complete the Device Trust check and complete login. |
