We are excited to share that a comprehensive modernization of the Box interface is coming soon. It's designed to provide a more modern, consistent, and accessible experience. This initiative represents a systemic update to our design language, ensuring that as Box evolves with new AI capabilities and functionality, our interface remains fresh, intuitive, and competitive.
What’s changing?
The UI uplift will be reflected across the core Box ecosystem to ensure a seamless transition between products. You can expect to see these modernized patterns across all Box products, such as Shield, Extract, Hubs, Notes, Forms, Sign, and many more, and across different surface areas on the web:
- Modernized visuals across web: rounded corners, updated icons, and refined inputs/buttons.
- Unified controls for consistent buttons, tooltips, dropdowns, and menus.
- Refreshed modals & dialogs (20+ core workflows) including updated Content Picker and Unified Share modal.
- Updated key surfaces: Preview, All Files, Search, Action Bar, Content Picker, Pending Invites.
- Within the preview experience, we’ve made a series of UI updates to improve clarity, consistency, and navigation:
- Download button: the download action is now represented by a familiar arrow icon for quicker recognition.
- Updated collapse sidebar icon: improved iconography makes it easier to understand and control the sidebar state.
- Version number placement refined: version information has been repositioned for better visibility without clutter.
- File type icon added to the header: quickly identify file types at a glance.
- Simplified navigation: the top-right close button has been replaced with a left-aligned back button for a more intuitive return experience.
Why are we making this change?
This initiative is aimed at updating UI elements in the Box interface. While these changes are visual in nature, all core functionality remains the same. Key updates include:
- Refined aesthetics: A shift to softer corners, new iconography, and updated illustrations for a more modern, refined feel.
- Improved readability: The implementation of larger font sizes and an expanded color palette to enhance clarity and visual hierarchy.
- Unified interface elements: Standardized app headers, an updated action bar on Files, and a modernized document toolbar in Preview.
- Streamlined flows: Refreshed modal designs for common tasks such as creating, renaming, deleting, or moving items.
Examples of updated UI elements
The new design language is built to reduce user friction by providing a unified look and feel across every tool you use. Beyond aesthetics, the uplift prioritizes your experience through improved usability, ensuring that the features you rely on daily are easier to navigate and more visually distinct. This update also improves accessibility across Box products, helping organizations meet WCAG 2.1 and 2.2 standards. Furthermore, updating to a systemic design language allows Box to deploy updates more quickly across all products, ensuring your users always have access to the latest standards without manual intervention.
