Recently, we made changes to support the new Admin Delegated Authorization feature for the Box for Microsoft Teams integration. As a result, all customers will now need to accept additional permissions the next time they use the Box for Microsoft Teams app, regardless of whether the feature is enabled or not. These new permissions are similar to the ones already required by the app. This is a one-time requirement and it will not impact your overall experience with the integration. Once these permissions are granted by the Admin, the user can continue enjoying the same seamless Box for Microsoft Teams experience. Alternatively, you can choose to consent on behalf of all users. Please note that accepting these permissions alone does not enable the Admin Delegated Authorization feature. To enable this feature, the Admin needs to enable it from the Box Admin Console. More information can be found here.

Our partnership with Microsoft has always centered around making your secure content easier to work with, we’re excited to continue this trend by bringing Admin delegated authorization to Admins using Box for Teams. Currently, using this integration empowers your teams to view, share, collaborate, and manage Box files, both internally and externally, all within Microsoft Teams. However, Box for Teams users have to authorize their Box account every time they logged in.   With this new release, admins can navigate to the Admin Console and authorize all the users in their organization. Removing this step for their users and making deployment and adoption faster and easier. This requires Admin activation from the Box Admin Console and Admins will also be required to accept additional permissions the next time they use the Box for Teams app.

With this new Box for Microsoft Teams enhancement, users can drag and drop their files from their desktop to the Teams chat or channel post window for seamless upload and sharing of their content into Box. All files are automatically saved to Box in the folder associated to that chat or channel. Please note, drag and drop to Box is only available in chats and public channels (Private and shared channels with drag and drop is targeted for later this year). To enable drag and drop, admins need to run this Powershell script. Once enablement is complete, whenever a user drags and drops a file in a chat or public channel, it will be uploaded to Box.

On March 31, 2024, Microsoft will roll out the new Teams client automatically to all users as per this announcement. After this time the classic Teams will not be available and as a result, the Box for Microsoft Teams v1 integration will also no longer. We are requesting customers move to the supported Box for Microsoft v2 to avoid service disruption to users. The deployment steps can be found here. Additionally, please see these end user enablement materials: Intro to Teams video and Using Box for Teams article to share with your users.   In March, 2023 Microsoft announced a new Teams desktop client for Windows experience with enhanced performance and a faster, simpler, and more flexible experience. The new Teams client installs and loads faster, letting users launch the app and join meetings more quickly. With the new Teams experience, Box for Microsoft Teams v2 will become the default experience.    End of Support of Box for Microsoft Teams V1 (Microsoft-built and unsupported version) Microsoft has began deploying the new Teams experience and plans to make it the default experience in the coming weeks. This new version of Teams will not support “adding Box as a Cloud Storage” option in the Files tab, which is how Box files are accessed in Box for Microsoft Teams V1 (a version initially built by Microsoft in partnership with Box).   Microsoft has released a timeline as to when they expect to make the new Teams the default for customers (based on license and update channel types).   Box for Microsoft Teams V2 as the default integration (Box-built and supported version) In 2018, Box built the Box for Microsoft Teams V2 integration. While we are currently running both V1 and V2, this newer version will become the default integration and one that we plan to continuously enhance going forward.   Admins will need to install the Box for Teams v2 integration to avoid service disruption to users. The deployment steps can be found here. Once the integration is deployed, there is no additional data migration needed to switch from Box for Teams v1 to Teams v2.   Also, to help your end users learn more about Teams v2, please share these key resources: Video: Intro to Box for Microsoft teams Using Box for Teams

Box for Microsoft Teams works to simplify and streamline meetings, communication and collaboration on Box content in Teams. We’re continuing to make enhancements that help users more easily find, preview, access, edit, and work with their Box files directly from Teams. With this upcoming enhancement, users can easily grant permissions to the right users without having to leave their Chat or Channel. They simply adjust access with instant permissions when prompted, in the event not everyone has permission in Box to view/access the shared content. Note: This functionality is supported in channels only with the latest Channels 2.0.
