We are excited to announce the ability to export metadata in Box Apps. This capability gives users the ability to export their metadata views directly to a CSV file, making it easier than ever to work with Box metadata in external tools like Excel, reporting systems, and auditing workflows.
How to export metadata
Box Apps users can now export the metadata from any View with just a few clicks.
- Export: From the "..." menu within a Box Apps View, select Export to kick off an export of all metadata visible in that View.
- Choose destination: Choose the destination for your exported file. Box will save it there automatically once the export is complete.
Key details
- Background processing with email notification: Exports run asynchronously in the background. When your file is ready, you'll receive an email with a direct link to the exported CSV.
- Rich, structured output: The exported CSV includes all metadata fields from the View, along with File ID, File Name, File Path, and more. All formatted for easy use in Excel and other tools.
- Admin visibility: Each export request is logged, giving admins the ability to track who triggered exports and when via the User Activity Report.
Why It Matters
With Export Metadata, Box Apps becomes an even more powerful hub for managing structured content at scale. Getting metadata into a portable format enables businesses to reason about it more flexibly, whether for reporting, auditing, compliance, or day-to-day business workflows.
Coming soon
When available, Export Metadata will be available to all Box Apps users who are co-owners or editors. App viewers can be granted access to export metadata by co-owners or editors.
