Introducing New Blocks in Box Apps: Metric Card, Media, and Breakdown

We're excited to announce three new block types coming soon to Box Apps:

  1. Metric Card Block
  2. Media Block
  3. Breakdown Block

Now you can surface calculated metrics, embed rich media, and visualize data trends all within a single app page. This keeps collaborators in context, reduces the need to jump between tools, and makes it easier to act on information in the flow of work.

Metric Card Block

With the Metric Card Block, you can display a calculated value for any integer or decimal metadata field right on your app page.

Choose from five calculation types: Item Count, Sum, Average, Maximum, or Minimum. Format the result as a number or in a currency of your choice (USD, JPY, CAD, EUR, or GBP), or define a fully custom format with your own prefix and suffix.

With the Metric Card Block, you can:

  • Surface key numbers at a glance: Display calculated metadata values, like total deal value, average score, or item count, directly on an app page so teams always have the numbers they need in context.
  • Connect metrics to live data: Link a view to define the dataset powering the calculation, so filters automatically apply and the metric stays current.
  • Control how numbers display: Abbreviate large values (e.g., 44K or 22.34M), set decimal precision, and let users drill into the underlying view for deeper exploration.
  • Build flexible formats: Go beyond standard currencies with custom prefixes and suffixes to match your team's terminology and reporting needs.

This helps teams move faster by putting the most important numbers front and center. No more switching to a spreadsheet or running a manual count to answer a simple question.

Media Block

With the Media Block, you can embed Box-stored content (i.e. images, videos, audio files, Box Notes, and PDFs) directly on an app page. Media renders inline in the block, so collaborators can review, play, and scroll through content without opening a separate preview or navigating away from the app.

With the Media Block, you can:

  • Embed rich content inline: Display images, videos, audio, PDFs, and Box Notes directly within an app page so reviewers never have to leave their workflow.
  • Play and interact in place: Watch videos, listen to audio, and scroll through PDFs right inside the block, no separate preview window needed.
  • Control the presentation: Set the block size to fit your layout, configure the title, and choose whether to show or hide it for a clean, focused experience.
  • Keep content connected to context: Pair media with other blocks on the same page so teams can review a file alongside its metadata, metrics, or related records.

This helps teams move faster by making content review a seamless part of the app experience.

Breakdown Block

With the Breakdown Block, you can create table-style chart based on metadata from any template, giving teams an additional, visual way to understand the distribution and composition of their data directly within an app page.

With Breakdown Block, you can:

  • Visualize metadata distributions: See how items are grouped across any metadata field within table-style chart.
  • Interact with your data: Hover over chart segments to see details, and click through to the underlying view to explore the items behind any data point.

This helps teams move faster by making data exploration a native part of the app experience.
