Large Scale Deployments: Box Drive

This article contains recommendations and considerations for administrators who want to deploy Box Drive to many computers.


Box Drive and other Enterprise features

  • Box Drive supports Device Trust but does not support Device Pinning.
  • Box Drive's activity will appear in the Admin Reports in the same way other application activity is logged. The comment Service: Box Drive will appear in the Change Details column of a User Activity report.  To learn how to generate Admin reports, see this article.

Migrate from Box Sync to Box Drive

Box Sync and Box Drive are two separate desktop applications that give you the ability to access Box content from your desktop environment.

However, there are known issues with having both Box Sync and Box Drive installed on a single machine. And since Box Drive has nearly all of Sync’s capabilities -- including the ability to work offline -- and since it includes an automated Sync Uninstaller, it’s worthwhile, simple, and fast to transition fully to Box Drive. Start the Box Drive install process and Drive automatically uninstalls Box Sync and then cleans up your synced files. More information on installing Box Drive.

When you install, you can also configure the default Box Drive folder location. And here are details on enabling Box Drive in your organization.

 

Windows

You can install Box Drive by downloading and running the Box Drive MSI. Before running the MSI, install the corresponding prerequisites listed below. There will not be a .exe installer for Box Drive.

Important Considerations:

  • Even with a silent MSI install, end users must login to Box Drive manually themselves.

 

Mac

Prerequisites:

See the Box OS support policy.

Administrators can distribute the  Box Drive PKG file to Mac users within their organization using standard application deployment tools. Alternatively, IT departments can install the PKG when imaging machines.

Important Considerations:

  • You must log into Box Drive manually the first time you launch the app.
  • When installing Box Drive as the root user, all users on the machine must manually add Drive to their list of startup items
  • If you're opening Box Drive for the first time in OSX 10.13, you must give Box Drive permission to run in System Preferences. You are prompted to open System Preferences and make the change. For more info see Installing and Updating Box Drive

Box Drive Auto-Updates

Box Drive automatically prompts you to update to the latest version when an updated version is available. You can choose not to update, but we do not recommend using outdated versions, as Box supports only the latest version of the product. For best results in virtual environments, we recommend persisting LocalAppData\Box\Box
