Troubleshooting "Upgrade to a newer version of Box. Your system is running an old version of Box."

Overview of Problem

The error notification appears when a user has a Box Drive database file created by a newer version than the one currently installed. This typically happens if Box Drive is reinstalled with an older installer (e.g., installing version 2.10, uninstalling it, and then installing version 2.9). This issue affects the functionality of Box Drive and prevents it from running correctly.
 

 

Process for Resolution

  1. Quit Box Drive:
    • Ensure Box Drive is completely closed.
  2. Uninstall Box Drive:
    • Follow the steps for uninstalling Box Drive, including the section “To remove all traces of the Box Drive application from your machine” found here.
  3. Remove Residual Files:
    • Navigate to C:\Users\[USER]\AppData\Local\Box\Box\Data and ensure this directory no longer exists.
  4. Reinstall Box Drive:
    • Download the latest installer of Box Drive from the official website.
    • Run the installer and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.

 

Outcome

  • Box Drive should now be successfully reinstalled and functioning correctly.
  • The error notification should no longer appear.
