Box provides a way for you to modify across your entire organization the default access level to files people share. The standard default access level is Editor -- that is, by default anyone in your organization who invites others to collaborate on a file brings them in as editors. This is regardless of whether the invited collaborators are internal or external to your company. It's up to each individual to invite people in as viewers, rather than editors, if they want to restrict who can actually modify a file.
But some organizations desire or need to exert tighter control over people's ability to edit content. If your organization exists within a highly-regulated business environment, or is especially averse to risk, you can change this default to the more secure setting of Viewer. This would apply to all files and folders your people share.
To change the default collaborator level throughout your enterprise
- From your Admin Console, go to Enterprise Settings > Content & Sharing.
- Scroll down to the Collaborating on Content section.
- Below the table, in the Default Collaboration section, click the Editor down arrow and then click Viewer.
- Click Save.
From this point forward, the default collaborator level is Viewer for everyone in your organization. Each person can change it back to Editor. But they must do so individually, each time they share a file.
