Issue

Attempting to create a shared link for a file with its publication range set to Can edit results in causing the following error message, preventing the operation from being completed:

“Editable shared links have been restricted by the admin or owner of this item.”

Root Cause

This error occurs because the creation of editable shared links is restricted by the tenant settings or the file owner’s settings.

Resolution

To enable the creation of editable shared links, the following two settings need to be configured:

• In the tenant where the file is located, navigate to Admin Console > Enterprise Settings > Content & Sharing tab > Shared Link, and under Shared Link Permissions, select "Can view, download, and edit" as the actions that link recipients can take on the file.

• In the file owner’s settings, navigate to Account Settings > Share tab > Shared Link, and select "Preview, download and edit the shared item" as the actions that link recipients can take.
