As you start your Box Content Cloud journey, relocating content that exists in other tools is an important first step. Users will use the tools that contain their important files, and so by moving those files to Box, you can achieve early adoption of your new cloud content management tool. Plus, by migrating off old tools, you can decommission those tools and achieve early ROI of your Box investment.
When scoping out your migration into Box, consider the volume of content you have across your business and the amount of content that certain teams and departments have. Your migration approach will vary by the size of the data you're looking to get into Box.
In most cases, admins can use Box Shuttle, Box’s built-in content migration solution, to move content into Box in bulk, while maintaining content ownership, version history, and permissions.
It's likely that during your migration journey, you'll have multiple migration projects – some that are large and others that are small. In some cases, users will want to migrate their own content into Box.
Box Shuttle: Content migration for everyone
If you’re looking to efficiently move user content into Box, look no further than the Box Admin Console. Box Shuttle provides organizations with powerful tools to get content into Box. With Box Shuttle, organizations can consolidate their content from both cloud and on-premises and centralize it into Box. You can learn more about Box Shuttle here, but a few core considerations when planning your migration include:
-
Shuttle allows for self-service migration of more than 10 source tools including Windows disks, network file shares, OneDrive for Business, Google Drive, and Dropbox for Business
-
To use Box Shuttle, you need to have global admin privileges on the tool you are migrating from.
-
Shuttle is the only migration option that allows for content ownership management – meaning admins can migrate user content and maintain user ownership of that content
-
Shuttle can also migrate version history of most sources and content permissions over alongside the content itself
-
Box Shuttle standard migration tooling allows for free migration of up to 10 TBs for all Box business customers, and 20 TBs for Box Enterprise Plus customers.
For more terabytes and additional source tools, consider Box Shuttle Advanced Tooling.
Other migration methods
Drag and Drop Files
If you have just a few folders or files, using drag and drop is the best option, as it’s easy to drag and drop a file into the Box web application to upload it. Just make sure you are using a browser that supports HTML5.
Upload Folders
If you want to migrate up to 500 files at once, upload the folders using the File Browser.
FTP
You can also send files to Box using FTP. While FTP is more effective at moving larger quantities of files than the options available in the Box web application, it's an older protocol that doesn't offer the same flexibility or reporting capabilities as a more modern migration tool, especially at scale. Read more about using FTP or FTPS with Box.
If you're considering FTP because you have more than a handful of files that need to get into Box, we recommend also looking at Box Shuttle.
